04/24/2015 - Vs UW-Superior

This past weekend the Gophs played their last conference series in the cities against conference newcomer UW-Superior. The team went into the weekend with nothing to lose and played like it. The Gophs swept the newcomer by a winning margin of 22-8. Game one was started by veteran righty Marshall Dalziel. He went 4 strong giving up 2 (1 earned), 3Ks and 3 hits. Marshall handed the ball over to veteran Austin Nordby who finsihed out the game, he finished with 7ks, 1 hit and giving up 3 (1 earned). The offense was led by catcher Chris Sticha going 2-4 with a triple and home run and driving in two. Freshman outfielder Dominic Wippler went 3-3 with a double, RBI and scored twice. Aaron Grossman sent the fans home happy with a walk off fielders choice.

 

Game 2 was given to freshman standout Ben Smith who did not dissapoint. Ben went 5 strong, 8Ks, 4 hits and gave up 2 earned. He was given an early 6 run lead after one and did not look back. Brock Chenier finished out the game giving up 1 earned, 3 hits and 3ks. The offense was led by Brock Chenier who went 2-4 with a triple and knocking in 3. Marshall Dalziel went 2-3 with a double and a RBI. Brian Dexheimer went 1-4 with a double and also knocking in 3. Aaron Schwecke picked up his team leading 7th stolen base of the year.

 

The Gophs kept on rolling into game 3. Spring workhorse David Cushing tossed the teams second complete game shut out in as many weeks. Cush had 6Ks, 3 hits and walk in his dominent performance. The offense started slow but finished strong. The team only gathered 3 hits but walked 7 times and was plunked 3 times and newcomer Tim Belrose racked up his 5th hits batsman of the year.

 

The weekend was capped off with Dominic Wippler winning player of the week with his 4-5, Double, RBI, BB, SB and 4 runs scored. Brock Chenier finished the weekend 3-11, Triple, 3 RBI, SB and 5 runs scored. Marshall Dalziel went 3-6, Double, RBI and 4 runs scored. The team finished conference play at .500 (6-6). The team will finish out their schedule with a DH against St. Thomas JV on 4/23 starting at 3pm, one 9 inning game at Gustavus JV on 4/26 at 1pm and a three game set at SDSU in Brookings on 5/2 (DH at 2), 5/3 at noon.
