Minnesota Club Baseball

09/17/2014 - Fall Preview

Hello Everyone,

The team has had a busy couple weeks since school started. They held try-outs the first Sunday of school and added fourteen new players to an already deep and experienced roster. Last weekend they held an inter-squad scrimmage and had a blast and hopefully knocked off some of the rust from not playing in a while. The team will travel to Fargo, ND where they will take on NDSU Friday for a game under the lights at Jack Williams Stadium and conclude the series Saturday morning with a twin bill set to start at 9am. The team is returning a core group that helped lead the team to the playoff appearance last year. The goal this year is not to just settle for the playoffs but to go to the World Series and compete. The pitching staff returns core leaders Marshall Dalziel, Austin Nordby, Derek Plath and “Rookie of the Year” Aaron Schwecke. The team wanted some solid arms from try outs and found a handful that will help lead the charge back to the playoffs. The starters on the mound this weekend will be two returners Austin Nordby and Marshall Dalziel, game three starter with be Freshman Ben Smith from Rosemount High School. The bull pen will be lead by Junior lefty Derek Plath as he looks to make an impact coming out of the pen this year.

The rest of the lineup will be a mix of new comers and returners. Two players to look for to have a great weekend in the field and at the plate are former Prior Lake teammates Chris Sticha and Topher Rose. Chris will be looked upon to lead an experienced pitching staff to the promise land behind the plate and at the dish in the middle of the lineup. New comer Topher, is a JC transfer who will be looked upon to have a great glove in the field, a solid bat in the middle of the lineup and toss a couple innings when needed.

We have been chomping at the bit since the season ended last year to get back out there and the time has finally come. The guys are ready to battle with NDSU and look to win the series and look to improve on the 3-0 all time record they have against the Bison. You can follow us on twitter @umnclubbaseball for in game updates and check the site Sunday to see full box scores. We hope to see some of you at the field this weekend cheering on the maroon and gold!
